Mokuhanga

Japanese Woodblock Printing

Wednesdays 5:45-8:45pm

Japanese woodblock printmaking, moku (wood) hanga (print), is distinguished from other printmaking techniques by the simplicity of materials involved in its creation. Wood, water, paper, pigment, paste, and simple carving and rubbing implements are all that is needed to make a print.

However simple the process, it can be labor intensive for the artist, who must undertake the roles of designer, carver, and printer.  This workshop guides you from the inspiration of the sketch to the mechanics of the print creating the understanding of thoughtful organization of color and space.  You will improve your carving skills, master the registration technique for multi-block printing, and create an edition of prints.  You will learn more about the properties of paper, both eastern and western, and how to prepare them for printing.  This Non-Toxic print process uses watercolor for ink and are printed without a press, allowing you to continue exploring Mokuhanga in your studio.
